The summer of 2018 was one of the hottest in Sweden, and it became the perfect excuse for my mom to start taking me to cafés, restaurants, and bars around Stockholm. Unlike most places, Swedish homes don’t typically need air conditioning—they’re built for the long, cold winters with only heating systems. But when a sizzling hot summer hits, everyone flocks to the malls for ice cream, cold drinks, and the refreshing chill of artificial climate control.
My mom and I lived in a small Stockholm apartment that sometimes reached 95 degrees. One day, in search of relief, she took me to the corner coffee shop, Espresso House, and asked if I could come inside. Not to brag, but the barista took one look at me—a cute Shiba Inu—and melted, saying, “Just for today, since we don’t have many customers.” The moment we stepped inside, the cool blast of the AC was pure bliss. Mom ordered a tall iced latte and got me a pup cup. We sat by the window, where I found a cozy spot to watch the world go by.
I love watching through the window, but it seemed like people outside were just as interested in looking at me. Soon, people started coming in, asking if they could take pictures, give me treats, and pet me. Mom, always kind, said “of course,” though she worried the baristas might ask us to leave. To our surprise, they didn’t—they even invited me back anytime! I guess being a good boy with a cute face has its perks.
That summer, and even after it ended, I got to visit several dog-friendly restaurants in Stockholm. Some offered me a bowl of water, others gave me tasty leftovers, and a few were extra generous with meat cuts, ground beef, and other goodies. At two places, I even got to sit right between my parents while enjoying a delicious treat.
Shout out to the pet-friendly restaurants in beautiful Stockholm! I hope they’re still thriving.
Shiba Inu Socialization Tips: It’s crucial to bring your Shiba Inu puppy to the dog park once they have all their vaccines. Although Shibas are independent, they are deeply attached to their owners, making early socialization essential. This helps prevent potential anxiety, fear, and even aggression towards other dogs and people in the future.
