You’ve probably heard that Shiba Inu puppies are some of the cutest puppies in the world—and it’s true! Not to brag, but even at just 3 days old, I was already a little heart-breaker. That’s how I ended up with the most wonderful mom and dad I could have asked for. My siblings and I were born in October 2015. Obby and Zoey were bigger, while I was the runt of the litter. I was so small and thin that my ears weren’t even floppy—they were smaller than usual and always pointing up. Can you spot me in the picture?
Both Obie and I were a bit more passive, but our sister Zoey was the active and agile one. Unlike our red fox-like fluffiness, Zoey’s fur had a hint of dark tones and a smaller, cute face. Obie loved sleeping way more than I did; whenever I called him for an adventure, he’d just turn around and take a nap.
The humans thought I would be the last one to be adopted, but lucky for me, as soon as my mom saw me, she fell in love. When she visited our home, my two siblings were jumping around, being all cute and Shiba-like, while I was more of an observant loner. I think that’s why mom chose me.
I couldn’t go with her that day because I still needed to learn some good habits, like potty training and gaining more weight. We had to say goodbye for a while, but right then and there, she knew my name would be Sam. I liked it better than my original name, Sutamuroku Extra Nice Lil’ Tops—Sam just seemed to fit.
Four weeks later, it was time for mom to pick me up. I was so excited to go with her, especially since there were three new puppies in the house—noisy and messy! I couldn’t wait to leave. I had gained weight and was looking sharp for my arrival at my new home. Mom was thrilled, too; as soon as she walked through the door, she immediately recognized me among the six-puppy pack.
We began the long trip back to Uppsala from Sturefors, a four-hour drive, but I spent most of the time sleeping on mom’s lap. By the time we got home, I was a bit confused. I missed my dog mom and siblings and didn’t know where to sleep or pee. While I explored the new house, mom set up my bed, food, and water, and got ready to take me outside. It was December—winter in Sweden—with snow everywhere.
